It is intended at this stage that these surveys will continue for two years, in line with SNH’s generic guidance. However, before a final decision is made about collecting data in year 2, the merits of undertaking a second year of baseline characterisation studies will be reviewed and discussed with SNH/MS in light of data collected in the first year. Boat-based surveys of marine mammals and basking shark will be conducted alongside but independently from the surveys for ESAS surveys. Passive Acoustic Monitoring Surveys (PAMS) will be undertaken using a hydrophone array towed behind the survey vessel which will collect data on cetacean vocalisations throughout the course of the boat based visual surveys. The data collected will complement the visual data obtained for odontocete cetaceans (particularly porpoises).
