Primary position, heading and vessel attitude data was provided by an Applanix POS MV Wavemaster II Inertial Navigation System (INS). The POS MV provides positioning, orientation and attitude data to be applied to remove the effects of vessel dynamics, even during periods of poor GPS signal and total outages. The system comprises of 3 main components: • Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) containing high quality accelerometers and gyros, installed as close as possible to the vessel’s axis of rotation and gravity. • Processing Control System (PCS) containing the GPS cards and main system interface. • 2 x Dual Frequency Trimble GPS receivers, mounted perpendicular to the vessel centreline. A Norbit WBMS multibeam echo sounder was used to collect bathymetry data within the survey area. A sound velocity (SV) sensor was installed within the transducer bracket to provide real-time SV values. The system was interfaced with the primary GNSS and AHRS to provide timing and motion data to the collected bathymetry data. The MBES and peripheral sensors were interfaced to QPS QINSy, which stored and visualised the data during acquisition. The multibeam system performed as expected during acquisition, generally providing high quality data collection throughout the survey area. Data was continually monitored during acquisition by the online surveyor. An Edgetech 4200 dual frequency digital high resolution side scan sonar system was utilised for this aspect of the works. The system comprised a digital tow fish and a transceiver processor unit (TPU) interfaced to a Coda DA4G geophysical data acquisition system running Coda GeoSurvey acquisition software. Coda GeoSurvey software records dual frequency raw data simultaneously which is time stamped and combined with positional information from QPS QINSy navigation software, providing real time geo-referencing of the records. The sonar data is displayed in real time and gains are applied to the raw data for preliminary interpretation of the seabed acoustic properties and for the investigation of any potential target present on the seabed or on the water column, along with the capability for target tagging and accurate measurement and image capture tools. The tow fish was positioned using the cable counter measurements together with the tow point position and reciprocal tow point course-over-ground bearing. The tow fish heading is then calculated as the calculated tow fish course-over-ground. The side scan sonar data collected was generally of high quality. Over 200% coverage was achieved, allowing targets to be identified on more than one survey line and the centres of each swath to be covered. Side scan sonar line spacing was 35m and an operating range of 50m was utilised. The fish was towed at an optimum height (for the range of 50m) of approximately 5m above the seabed. Occasional tugging was evident, although this has not affected the quality of the final mosaic or the identification of any targets, features or seabed character.
