Report number: R44.This report describes the location, origin and nature of gravel patches from selected areas around the UK, mostly outside the 12 nm limit. The areas are the English Channel, the Irish Sea and the Hebrides and West Shetland shelves. Although all the gravel patches are lag deposits and exist because finer material has been winnowed away, there are significant differences in the characteristics of gravels in the 3 areas. These can be related to a combination of factors, which include the nature of the bedrock, glacial and fluvial processes and biogenic carbonate build up. Gravel areas were identified primarily from published BGS 1:250000 scale maps and it should be noted that gravel on such maps is defined by areas where 80% or greater of the sediment by weight consists of material with grain size on more than 2mm. Due to the origins and nature of the gravel, in many cases the patches will also contain cobbles and boulders, even if there is no direct evidence of these larger clast sizes in the sediment samples.
