Given Narec’s unique role as a national centre for offshore renewables and the limited existing relevant research into the field, a programme of voluntary science investigation and preliminary fieldwork was proposed and agreed with the regulators. This was designed to advance the level of understanding of bats around offshore wind installations, and to review the potential risks and impacts specific to this proposed site. The report is structured to provide some background into UK wind development and interactions with bats in Section 2 (including the appropriate planning guidance), with further detail provided about the Blyth demonstrator in Section 3. The specific aims and key hypotheses are presented in Section 4, with the resulting programme of works laid out in Sections 5 & 6 – onshore and offshore respectively. The key outcomes are reported in Section 7, with further activity proposed in section 8. The science of bat interaction with wind turbines is relatively young and is evolving rapidly onshore but is complex. Section 2 provides a brief background of the UK context, together with significant bibliography of the current knowledge base, listing those species that are known to be present in Britain generally and Northumberland in particular.
