Each soundtrap was configured to record continuous data at 48kHz and to run a high frequency click detector on data sampled at 384kHz. Species of interest are common dolphin (Delphinus delphis), bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), Risso’s dolphin (Grampus griseus), harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena), and minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata). Between them, these species vocalise over a wide frequency range, from 70Hz pulses of minke whales, to 130kHz clicks of harbour porpoise. To capture such a wide range of sounds, SoundTraps (oceaninstuments.co.nz) were used for data collection, which acquire data at a sample rate of 384kHz and combine automatic high frequency click detection to capture high frequency odontocete echolocation clicks, and continuous recording of the data resampled at 48kHz which can be used to detect dolphin whistles and minke whale pulsed calls. High frequency sampling at frequencies over 300kHz is therefore required to capture these sounds. However, continuous recording of high frequency sounds generates more data than can be easily stored during long deployments. SoundTraps from Ocean Instruments (oceaninstruments.co.nz) overcome this problem by sampling raw data at a rate of 384kHz and then running a simple transient click detector on the raw data. Timestamped waveforms of transient sounds are stored for further offline processing: for each detected transient, 249 samples prior to the detection and 249 samples following the detections are stored, generating snippets of sounds 1.3ms in duration. At the same time, the SoundTrap processor decimates (reduces the frequency of) the data 8x to 48kHz and stores these lower frequency data continuously to file. This means that high frequency echolocation clicks from dolphin and porpoise can be detected by further offline classification of the detected transients, and other sounds such as dolphin whistles, minke whale pulses, and noise can be detected and measured in the continuous 48kHz data. SoundTraps record both the detected transients and the continuous 48kHz data into proprietary compressed (.sud) files, which typically reduce the amount of stored data by x3 or x4 using the algorithms described in (Johnson et al., 2013). In this way, SoundTraps are able to operate for many months, storing data on up to four 256 or 512GByte micro SD cards. All data were collected on a 24 hour on / 24 hour off duty cycle in order to conserve battery power, to ensure that SoundTraps could record for a full four-month deployment.
