The review collated data for 70 species, covering key parameters including population estimates, migration routes and timing, flight height and speed, as well as avoidance behaviour. High-resolution tracking data for 15 species enabled comparisons with traditional ringing recovery data, supporting the identification of broad migration corridors. Despite technological advances reducing uncertainty in flight speed estimates, significant gaps remain in population size data, flight height distributions, and avoidance behaviour. For each species, the project then used information on migratory routes as well as expert knowledge to estimate the percentage of individuals (either breeding, non-breeding, or passage) from the relevant biogeographic population that are likely to move through UK waters. However, in many cases, these estimates are likely to be highly uncertain. Consequently, the project assessed confidence in percentage estimates based on the quality of published information and expert knowledge of the species' migration routes.
