The 41.5 MW wind farm is located approximately 6km offshore of Blyth and comprises five wind turbine generators configured in a single row. The survey was undertaken between 30/08/2018 and 14/09/2018. This survey, comprising the collection of multibeam bathymetry and side scan sonar data, marks the first of a 3-year monitoring program, which will be undertaken at 6 monthly intervals, and after any major storm events. The objectives of the survey program are to acquire survey data to a resolution that will: - Identify seabed debris within the construction area; - Identify changes to seabed morphology, to enable the evaluation of the effectiveness of installed scour protection and ratify predictions for scour development; - Inform the foundation and cable maintenance schedule; and - Satisfy the requirements of the Marine Licence. Data acquisition was undertaken from Bibby HydroMap’s own dedicated shallow draft vessel MV Proteus, equipped with a Dual head Norbit WBMs multibeam, Klein 3000 side scan sonar, POS MV MRU and CNAV positioning system. In some instances, this compliance will not be feasible. True series A dual head Norbit WBMS multibeam echo sounder was used to collect bathymetry data within the survey area. Within the transducer mounting a Sound Velocity sensor was fitted to provide real-time SV values. The system was interfaced with the Applanix PosMV system to provide timing and motion data to the collected bathymetry data. The MBES and peripheral sensors were interfaced to QPS QINSy, which stored and visualised the data during acquisition. The Kongsberg EA400 single beam echo sounder was utilised as a quality check on the absolute values of the MBES data. This data was also interfaced to QPS QINSy (version 8.18.2), which recorded and visualised the data. The multibeam system performed well during acquisition, providing good quality data collection throughout the survey area, but not optimum data due to persistent marginal weather conditions. Data was continually monitored during acquisition by the online surveyor to ensure Bibby HydroMap as data standards were achieved. The data was interpolated in the BHL office using standard interpolation techniques within Global Mapper version 19. The sound velocity profile (SVP) of the water column was continually monitored during the survey, with profiles collected twice a day. The profiles indicated minor variation during the survey, fluctuating between 1498ms-1 and 1501ms-1 A summary of the collected SV profiles and a representative SV profile can be found in Appendix 2. Raw SV profile data is available on request. The recorded sound velocity information within the survey area indicates this variation had negligible influence in the total propagated uncertainty (TPU) of the multibeam soundings. A Klein 3000 dual frequency digital high-resolution side scan sonar system was utilised to acquire data. The system comprises a digital tow fish and a transceiver processor unit (TPU), interfaced to an acquisition computer system running Coda GeoSurvey (version 6.2.0) acquisition software. Coda GeoSurvey software records dual frequency raw data simultaneously, which is time stamped and combined with positional information from QPS QINSy (version 8.18.2) navigation software, providing real time geo-referencing of the records. The sonar data is displayed in real-time and gains are applied to the raw data for preliminary interpretation of the seabed acoustic properties and for the investigation of any potential target present on the seabed, or in the water column, together with the capability for target tagging and accurate measurement and image capture tools. The tow fish positioning was carried out using the USBL system onboard, which calculated a range and bearing to a beacon installed on the tow cable (1.50m from the tow fish), relative to a known vessel offset. As a backup, the length of cable out was measured using a T-Count system. For shallow areas, where the Klein 3000MP tow fish became too close to the vessel and caused interference with the MBES system, a hull mounted EdgeTech 4200 tow fish was used. The system comprises a digital tow fish and a transceiver processor unit (TPU) interfaced to an acquisition computer system running Coda GeoSurvey acquisition software. The tow fish was positioned using a constant offset from the common reference point. The side scan sonar data collected was generally of high quality. Over 125% overlap was achieved, allowing targets to be identified on more than one survey line and the centres of each swath to be covered. Side scan sonar line spacing was 55 metres for the Klein 3000, at an operating range of 75 metres. For the EdgeTech 4200MP, line spacing was 25 metres and an operating range of 50 metres was utilised. The fish was towed at an optimum height (for the range of 75 or 50 metres) of approximately 7.5 or 5 metres above the seabed. Occasional tugging was evident, although this has not affected the quality of the final mosaic or the identification of any targets, features or seabed character.
