The entire survey covered a total area of approximately 34.5 square kilometres. The survey was commissioned to meet two main objectives: 1) To identify the thickness of sediment units and depth to rockhead; and 2) To identify the positions of possible ferrous debris. In order to meet these requirements the following data were collected: • Seismic data to provide information on the sub-surface geology and thickness of surficial sediments • Bathymetric soundings to determine seabed topographic variations and to reduce seismic data to datum • Magnetometer data to determine the position and size of ferrous objects The collection of survey data was undertaken between 3rd February and 5th February 2005 utilising a vessel called ‘Kirkspray’. A comprehensive set of data was collected throughout the survey site. The bathymetry data indicate that the seabed slopes gently from 10m below Chart Datum (CD) in the northwest corner, towards the southeast to a maximum depth of 30m below CD. Underlying less than 1m of surface sediments are glacial tills, which form a generally uniform horizon. This top horizon, thought to be ablation till, has been divided locally into the Upper Sedimentary Unit (USU) and the Lower Sedimentary Unit (LSU). The total thickness of these units ranges from 5 to 13m with the greater values found in the north east of the survey area. The base of the Sediment Units/top of the underlying chalk is not a distinct horizon due to the fact that the top of the chalk is heavily weathered. Therefore, a change in the character of the seismic records rather than a distinct reflector has been mapped and is likely to coincide with the weathered zone at the top of the bedrock. The magnetometer data indicate that there are several small ferrous objects on the site.
