The objective of the investigation was to obtain a preliminary geological overview of the ground conditions and geotechnical data to be used in the conceptual design of the turbine foundations. This report presents the results of the fieldwork and the subsequent laboratory testing undertaken. Due to the wind farm pre-dating the data clauses which The Crown Estate insert into all offshore windfarm leases, the offshore wind farm developer had no obligation to provide survey data to The Crown Estate. However, despite this, The Crown Estate are pleased to have worked with Innogy and Greencoat Capital to retrieve as much of the historical data as possible. All of the retrievable data can now be found on the MDE. Please see further details in the metadata lineage. All boreholes were performed from the jack-up platform Coastal Explorer. The platform consists of three pontoons linked together with four legs mounted externally on bearings to provide maximum stability. Each leg is 25 m in length, giving a maximum working height of 22 m from the underside of the platform to the seabed, dependant on sea state, tides and leg penetration. The platform was fitted with a 12.0 m high twin CRII drilling mast incorporating a Dando 250 high speed power swivel. The platform is self-propelled and driven by integral diesel engines mounted in the outer two pontoons. An Equipment Data Sheet for this platform is presented in Appendix A. Cable tool percussive boring techniques were used in all boreholes to advance casing of 200 mm and 150 mm diameter through the soil generally to depths from 2.0 m to 15.2 m, after which rotary coring was employed. Samples were recovered and in situ tests performed as per NWP and HBR's requirements. Rotary coring was performed in all boreholes using the Geobor S triple tube wireline system. This comprises an outer casing measuring 146 mm in diameter, an inner barrel which is dropped inside the outer casing and a plastic transparent coreline which fits inside the inner barrel. During the coring process the outer casing is advanced a maximum of 1.5 m into the bedrock with the inner barrel, which is then retrieved with the core inside the coreline. Boreholes were advanced to termination depths of between 27.10 m and 32.0 m. Cores were obtained both in the overlying till and bedrock, and in situ tests performed down to the top of the bedrock as per HBR's requirements. A Poly Crystalline Diamond (PCD) face discharge bit was used during all coring operations and this proved effective in all strata cored.
