The series is comprised of Fine-scale boat based drone surveys consisting of multiple drone (multirotor drone type DJI Mavic 3) video hovers (stationary drone with a downward-facing camera) at minimum altitudes of 40 m to monitor the site for marine fauna (seabirds and marine mammals) abundance and behaviour prior to tidal energy device installation. Flights were performed using an DJI Mavic 3 operated from the ‘Lynas Shuttle’ (September 2022) or ‘Kaimoana’ (March/April 2023, June 2023) vessels. During surveys an experienced and licensed MRD pilot (Lilian Lieber) and assistant (Julian Dale), and an experienced marine mammal / seabird observer were onboard. The MRD pilot and assistant were primarily concerned with operating the MRD. The observers detected seabirds within the Magallanes installation site, identifying these animals to species-level (whenever possible), and directing the pilot towards these animals. The MRD drone was flown manually using the DJI Fly application on the Radio Controller (RC) with the built-in screen. Flights were only performed whilst the boat was stationary/drifting marginally to aid operations and prevent disturbance of animals. Operating MRD from vessels meant that activities were only possible during reasonable sea and weather conditions, which places constraints on flight performance. Previous applications of these approaches have operated MRD from shorelines (Lieber et al 2019, 2021, 2023; Costagliola-Ray et al 2022), which would eliminate these constraints. However, the Magallanes installation site is several kilometres from the shoreline, placing it beyond the safe MRD operational range and practical observer range. Moreover, sea and weather conditions preventing vessel operations likely prevent safe MRD operations also. Therefore, alternatives to vessel-based operation were unviable.
