This monitoring was required as part of the conditions attached to the Food and Environment Protection Act (FEPA) consent and followed the programme set out within the Environmental Monitoring Plan (Entec, 2009). The pre-construction monitoring comprised the following elements, which were completed between March 2010 and December 2010: • Geophysical Surveys comprising of bathymetric, side sonar and Acoustic Ground Discrimination surveys; • Benthic surveys comprising epibenthic trawling, benthic grab sampling and intertidal surveying; and • Fish surveys comprising trawling, potting and gill net surveys. A literature search and assessment of electromagnetic fields (EMF) was also undertaken in order to discuss the potential impacts upon sensitive species and identify a suitable monitoring programme. From applying the variety of geophysical, benthic, fish and intertidal surveying techniques described above, it has been possible to obtain a detailed pre-construction baseline description of the marine ecology and seabed characteristics that are present within the Tees Bay area and in particular, within the proposed TOWF site boundary and export cable route. It is likely that the installation of offshore wind turbines will be able to enhance the value of the area through the introduction of artificial structures which will in the long term, act as fish aggregating devices (FADs), potentially attracting a wider variety and diversity of marine species into a currently relatively impoverished area. The introduction of the turbine bases may add heterogeneity to the area by providing a habitat for fish and invertebrate assemblages, thus potentially increasing the lobster populations within the wind farm site.
