All surveys were carried out by experienced ornithologists. Two methods were used to record the ornithology of the site: one to cover periods of slack tide (one hour either side of high and low water) and one to cover periods of peak flow (during the other four hours of the tidal cycle). During the summer months, eight hours were completed at each VP per month, with four hours focussed on peak flow and four hours focussed on slack tide. During the winter months six hours were completed at each VP per month, as the number of birds and marine mammals on site was less than in the summer.
