Lincs Wind Farm Ltd (LWFL) will commence installation of the Lincs/LID6 offshore wind farm, comprising 75 wind turbines offshore from Skegness during 2011. The Lincs/LID6 array will lie immediately to the east of the existing turbine arrays of Lynn and Inner Dowsing (LID) (Figure 1). The proposed turbines are Siemens SWT-3.6-120’s which have a 120 metre rotor diameter and a hub height of 85.25 metres above mean sea level. And a subset of the UK’s wintering pink-footed geese Anser brachyrhynchus pass through the area in the vicinity of the proposed development during their autumnal migration, en route to wintering sites in Norfolk. The aim of this study is to - • Characterise the nature of pink-footed goose flights over and in the vicinity of the proposed Lincs/LID6 turbine array and • To experimentally extend the range of the bird detection radar to cover the entirety of the Lincs/LID6 offshore wind farm while not compromising data collection over the LID arrays. This latter consideration was considered critical in order that inter-annual comparisons of flight behaviour over LID would remain valid. Standard marine band radar sets are used with the output displayed and captured on a computer. This output is replicated to a second computer running Merlin bird detection software (http://www.detect-inc.com). Whilst Merlin has the ability to automatically identify, clean and store bird tracks, this functionality is not currently used for the goose surveys as it was not designed to track goose or goose-like flocks and therefore does not operate adequately in this respect. Consequentially, Merlin is used to assist the radar ornithologists in identifying goose-like tracks by flagging likely targets based on a pre-assigned set of attributes only. Screen capture software records the Merlin radar picture every few seconds. This permits subsequent replay of the radar images during post-processing by experienced radar ornithologists who identify and digitise goose-like flocks manually.
