Two (2) no. subsea transmission cables carrying electricity from the NNG offshore site will reach landfall at Thortonloch beach, approximately 10km southeast of Dunbar, Scotland. From this point to the proposed grid connection point at Crystal Rig wind farm, 2 no. onshore underground transmission cables (installed in the same trench) will be constructed of approximately 12.3km in length. The majority of the required investigation took place in a zone affected by tidal variation in level and waterline extents. These survey works were carried out in intermittently submerged areas subject to tidal variation, generally landward of the line of Lowest Astronomical Tide (LAT). Additional geophysical survey works were also conducted within fields south of the A1, where the proposed transmission cables cross HV cables exiting Torness Power Station and the east coast mainline railway. The principle objectives of the survey were as follows:- 1. To accurately determine the depth and nature of the overlying sediments 2. To accurately determine the physical characteristics of the bedrock 3. To accurately determine ground levels 4. The borehole, trial pit, slit trench and in situ test locations were selected by Mainstream Renewable Power Limited. The co-ordinates and reduced levels were surveyed by Whiteford Geoservices Ltd to National Grid and Ordnance Datum Newlyn. The survey works were undertaken in two distinct phases, as follows: 1. Phase 1 – Geophysical works (Seismic Refraction and Electrical Resistivity Tomography) 2. Phase 2 – Geotechnical (Rotary Boreholes, Dynamic Probes and Window Sampling) and Topographic works A JCB 3CX 9T rubber tyred excavator was employed to carry out the trial excavations. Field measurement of bearing capacity was undertaken using hand penetrometer and the resulting data recorded on the relevant engineering log in kN/m2, A Dando Terrier lightweight mini boring rig was employed to carry out dynamic probing and also to collect approximately 2m long undisturbed samples of superficial soils at two of the dynamic probing positions. The logs provide descriptions of the materials encountered, details of the samples and tests taken, together with observations made during boring, drilling, pitting and window sampling. Photographs of the trial pits and recovered cores are presented. These works were performed in accordance with the relevant standards.
