This appraisal uses existing published data to evaluate the benthic communities within the vicinity of the proposed cable route corridor, to assess their importance relative to the wider Wash area, and in comparison to other similar habitats. Given that the previous datasets are somewhat dated, a survey of the biological resources along the route corridor was conducted and a comparison of the resources through time is made. An assessment has been made as to the potential impacts of the temporary disturbance to these communities from laying the cable and whether this is likely to have implications through the food webs to fisheries, marine mammals and essentially to birds. This assessment is made in light of the area’s designation as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Special Protection Area (SPA), as part of the Natura 2000 network of internationally designated conservation sites. The area in the immediate vicinity of the cable route will be physically disturbed through the temporary displacement of the sediment in this area. 7.8 Secondary to these impacts, will be those in the wider area, where there may be an increase in turbidity, reduction in water quality and the potential for neighbouring benthic communities to be smothered with the resulting sediment resettlement. The tolerances and responses of benthic infauna to transitory movement of sediment at the benthic boundary layer are not well known. The significance of potential losses within a particular site on higher trophic levels in the food web leading to fish and birds is also difficult to quantify.
