The objective of this project was to provide better understanding of the processes leading to the rehabilitation of the seabed following gravel extraction in order to provide an indication of the likely timescale involved for different areas of the seabed. Also to identify dredging patterns/methods which optimise the potential to return the seabed to its pre-dredging conditions within an acceptable time scale. The key customer purpose was to assist Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (defra) and the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) to develop management strategies for minimising the environmental impacts of ongoing dredging activity and assessing the recovery of areas of the seabed from marine aggregate extraction. The current report details work conducted by The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS) over the course of a four year research programme. It was funded by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM), the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and The Crown Estate as part of a joint policy initiative to address this important gap in current knowledge. The project was also overseen by a Steering Group, membership of which is given in an Annex to the main report.
