The conduct of the surveys only entailed a total of 25 days data gathering but due to the exposed nature of the site it was only possible to carry out survey operations in the most benign of sea and weather conditions. It is perhaps no surprise that this being a wave energy site that over the period winter period sea and weather conditions were not conducive to effective progress of the survey. The coast is very open to the weather and this along with some unfavourable conditions when compared to climatological data particularly in the early months of 2012 meant that the survey data gathering phase extended over a longer period than anyone involved had envisaged. In order to manage data gathering the site was split into manageable blocks of approximately 2km of coastline. This allowed the data to be gathered in blocks that could be completed in a contiguous manner. There was always at least a 100m overlap between the data gathered in adjacent blocks for quality control purposes. Tidal application was applied to the data using Lowest Astronomical Tide (LAT) values obtained from the UKHO Vertical Offshore Reference Framework (VORF) as supplied by the client prior to contract start. This model was used to lookup the Ordnance Datum – LAT offset at the centre of each 2km block. This was then applied to the reference point at the RTK Base ashore so that data was gathered to LAT thereby allowing the surveyor on the ground information on the coverage being achieved in real time. Control was established at Birsay Bay and at Row Head and these 2 RTK base stations provided good coverage over the entire area of the survey throughout data gathering operations.
