The grab sampling is part of a suite of offshore ecological survey work also comprising drop down camera survey, beam and otter trawling which will together provide an benthic ecological characterisation of the proposed development site. All sites, including near-field and mid-field characterisation sites, were visited and samples were successfully obtained from 26 of the 31 Galloper sites. A grab sampler was deployed at least three times at each site to obtain a satisfactory biological sample, with a minimum of 5 litres of material before sieving. Where sampling was unsuccessful, the seabed typically consisted of hard clay, identified by clay streaks on the grab jaws, with or without a thin veneer of sand or gravel. At the Inner Gabbard Bank, 32 of the 40 sites were visited in 2004. Following an unsuccessful grab attempt at Site 48, the vessel’s hands-free grab capture mechanism was damaged during retrieval. Increasing winds and swell subsequently prevented further survey work, and operations were halted so that repairs could be carried out ashore. It was later agreed that the remaining sites on the Gabbard Bank, together with control sites to the north and south (15 sites in total), would be surveyed the following spring alongside the cable route survey. Of the 76 proposed grab sites, 62 were visited during the 2004 survey. Samples were successfully collected at 48 sites, while 14 sites yielded insufficient material for a suitable sample. In 2005, the proposed turbine array boundaries on the Gabbard and Galloper banks were revised and additional grab sites were included to cover the new areas. Sites that had been missed during the 2004 survey but were considered priorities for sampling were revisited in 2005, although samples could not be obtained at sites where collection had been unsuccessful in 2004. These sites were located in the middle of the Gabbard Bank and at the northern and southern control areas. Samples were successfully obtained from 49 sites in 2005, including two sites where only enough material was collected for chemical analysis. Samples could not be obtained from 13 sites. Site 3 was relocated after the grab failed to recover material from the original location. The coverage of the grab survey is summarised in Figure 1. The locations of beam trawls and otter trawls are shown in Figure 2. No trawl data were obtained from Site 62 (Inner Gabbard Bank) because the trawl was lost after becoming snagged. It is believed that the trawl became buried in the face of a sandwave, causing the bridle to snap.
