In order to accomplish the requirements of the Marine License outlined in the previous section the monitoring specification was developed by GEL and DONG Energy Ltd, and approved by the Marine Management Organisation (MMO), therefore the following methodology was applied. The methodology described for underwater noise monitoring was designed to capture comprehensive data on four piling operations for the WMR monopile foundation installations. The data were collected in order to provide a characterisation of the sound source level (SL) (piling) and an assessment of the variation in noise level with distance from the piling operation and to predict impact zones around the piling activity (Section 3). As mentioned in the scope of work approved by the MMO; as the first piling event exhibited non indicative characteristics, the fifth pile was monitored and this data was used in the analysis instead.
