Offshore data was not avaliable from the NaREC project area for use in analysis. As a result data from an onshore LIDAR unit (ZephIR 300) together with long term reference data (from a meteorological reference station and a meso-scale model) has been used to provide an estimation of the long term ambient wind climate at various locations around the NaREC project area. Turbine hub height wind speeds have been taken from the WRA. The extreme wind analysis carried out in this report uses annual extreme hourly mean wind speeds from the Boulmer reference station. Site turbulence is based on data obtained from a meso-scale climate model. The analysis presented is valid for turbine hub heights of 100 m above ordnance datum (AOD). This report presents these parameters in the context of the International Standard IEC 61400-1: Wind turbine systems, Part 1: Safety requirements, 2005 (IEC 61400-1, 2005). The IEC International Standard 61400-3: Design requirements for offshore wind turbines (IEC 61400-3, 2009) states that the wind conditions for offshore turbines should be assessed in the same manner as for onshore turbines, however, other external factors, such as the marine environmental conditions, should be considered in the design of offshore turbine components.
