The principle objectives of this second Sheringham Shoal post-construction benthic monitoring survey were to describe the seabed sediments and associated benthic biological communities that occur in and around the OWF area. In order to determine the extent of any development impacts on the area, statistical comparisons were carried out on the data acquired in the pre- (2009) and post-construction (2012, 2014) surveys. The survey followed the specification set out in the Sheringham Shoal OWF Terms of Reference which were agreed with industry regulators prior to commencement of the survey. A total of 52 sediment samples for Particle Size Distribution Analysis (PSD), 55 benthic grab samples for faunal analysis, 487 seabed images and five epibenthic trawls were acquired during the course of the investigation. Following deployment, the grab was brought aboard the survey vessel and the sample discharged into a plastic box. A photograph of each sample was taken (Appendix Plate 1). A note was made of the obtained sample volume, along with supplementary information of the sediment characteristics (Appendix Table 2). Where the sample volume exceeded 5 litres, three small sub-samples were taken from the sediment in the box and a pooled sample of between 0.5 and 1.0 litre was placed in a labelled plastic bag for subsequent analysis of particle size distribution (PSD). In areas of harder substrates, discretions were used to obtain the best balance of sediment and faunal samples. If the total sample volume was less than 5 litres after 3 attempts, the sample was retained for faunal analysis only and a separate PSD sample was obtained from a new grab or previously rejected sample where possible. In the event that a sample of > 5 litres in volume had not been acquired after 3 attempts from a given station then the station was abandoned and the largest previously acquired sample was retained for subsequent analysis. Once a sub-sample was extracted for sediment analysis, the remainder of the sample was placed on a 1mm mesh stainless steel sieve and gently washed using seawater to remove excess fine substrate. The residual sample was transferred into a labelled plastic bucket, preserved in buffered formalin and sealed with a tight fitting lid. The samples were retained for subsequent faunal extraction and quantitative analysis of the benthic infauna in the MESL laboratory.
