The survey data were collected between November 2010 and May 2011 and comprise measurements of Directional wave parameters, Current profiles, Water levels, Suspended sediment concentrations , Water temperature , Wind speed, gust and direction, Air temperature and pressure. The aim of the measurement campaign was to capture low frequency, high energy events and high frequency, low energy events in order to establish a description of the site conditions. The three seabed measurement stations were deployed on the 1st November 2010. The equipment at Locations 1 and 2 was recovered in February 2011, whereas the deployment at Location 3 was extended to allow collection of oceanographic data concurrent with the meteorological buoy. The resultant dataset from Location 3 is approximately 6 months of oceanographic data and in excess of 3 months of meteorological data. The deliverables of this contract are intended to inform the Environmental Impact Assessment (to be undertaken by ABPmer) and the engineering design of wind farm structures. The locations were chosen in agreement between E.ON, EMU, ABPmer and the fisheries liaison representatives appointed by E.ON. Nortek AWAC: In order to establish any spatial differences in wave climate across the wind farm site, the approach taken was to use the same wave measurement device at each of the three chosen locations. The selected instrument was the Nortek AWAC which, in addition to the wave parameters, provides current profiles and water level readings. A 1MHz AWAC was the appropriate frequency to operate at Locations 1 and 2 (25m and 26m depth to LAT respectively). At location 3 (49m depth to LAT), a 600 KHz AWAC was deployed. In each case, the acoustic heads of the AWAC instruments were mounted 0.6m above the seabed. A current profile was recorded every ten minutes over a 60 second averaging period, and a wave measurement burst was conducted every hour, which consisted of 1024 records at 1Hz. This equates to 2048 records created during the Acoustic Surface Tracking burst. A requirement of the contract stipulates that AWACs less than two years old must be used for this project. Alternatively, instruments greater than two years old must be returned to the manufacturer for acceptance testing. Two instruments (those used at Locations 1 and 2) were required to be returned to the manufacturer. They also underwent thorough testing by EMU prior to deployment to ensure acceptable performance. Aqualogger 210TYT: Aqualogger 210 TYT instruments with Seapoint Optical Backscatter Sensors (OBS) were used to provide backscatter measurements. This was to complement the acoustic backscatter data collected by the AWACs. The backscatter readings were converted to suspended sediment concentration using a regression equation established by taking water samples during field operations. Further details of the methods used in establishing the conversion can be found in section 9.5. The Aqualoggers were mounted on the seabed frame 0.5m above the seabed and also provided sea temperature measurements. The Aqualoggers were configured to take a burst of readings – at 1 Hz for 60 seconds, once every ten minutes. The burst was averaged during post-processing to produce one reading per ten minutes. The Aqualogger instruments deployed for this project were purchased by EMU in October 2010. The on board sensors were calibrated by the manufacturer prior to dispatch. Seabed Franme Mooring: Each AWAC and Aqualogger was mounted in a seabed frame, deployed as part of an L shaped mooring as shown in Figure 2.2.1 below. The L shaped mooring allowed the equipment to be marked by a navigational mark at the surface and to be safely recovered. Suspended Sediment Measurements: The suspended sediment measurements were gathered using both the acoustic return of the AWACs and the Optical Backscatter readings. These values were converted to a suspended sediment concentration in mg/l using a regression equation. The equations were established by analysing water samples collected alongside the instruments and from previous studies. The analysis of water samples was undertaken at EMU?s sediment laboratory according to the procedure set out in “EMU in-house Methods for the Determination of Suspended Sediment (Emu MET/17): 1.2µm Glass Fibre Paper Filtration Method (105ºC)” based on “Methods for the Examination of Water and Associated Materials” (HMSO, 1980). Meteorological Buoy: The meteorological buoy deployed at Location 3 was developed for the project to accommodate two different wind sensors. The primary sensor was a Vaisala WXT 520 measuring wind speed and direction, gust speed, air temperature and pressure. A secondary sensor; a Gill Windsonic was mounted on the buoy for redundancy. The Planet Ocean DB-175 buoy provided the measurement platform. Both sensors logged data to an on board logger unit every ten minutes and one record per hour was transmitted ashore via iridium satellite telemetry. At the time of report writing, the Vaisala sensor is undergoing a calibration procedure at a recognised MEASNET facility; Svend Ole Hansen ApS Wind Engineering.
