It has been assessed that there is the potential for unexploded ordnance (UXO) to lie within the Kentish Flats. The three most likely sources of UXO are: a. Air dropped bombs, either dumped or used in action against vessels during WW2. b. Naval vessel ordnance, such as shells and torpedoes. c. Moored or floating sea mines The H&SAW Act and CDM regulations do not specifically require a search for unexploded ordnance. However there is an obligation on those responsible for intrusive works to ensure that a comprehensive threat assessment is undertaken and risk mitigation measures are made with regard to all underground hazards on site.
