The project has been co-funded by Historic England and The Crown Estate, with support being provided via the Offshore Wind Evidence and Change Programme. The project was commissioned in light of the considerable expansion of the offshore renewable energy sector in the North Sea and the associated on-going programmes of archaeological assessment, which are revealing considerable detail about past landscapes now submerged and buried in areas not subject previously to detailed survey and analysis. The project outputs, and the updated Research NSD Management Framework ensures that the information and evidence produced from any archaeological work conducted in the North Sea area, be that for development purposes or academic research, contributes to greater understanding of the submerged prehistory of the region. The revised Framework has been developed by Landward Research and Wessex Archaeology with support provided by an expert steering group. The updated framework has been produced in a digital format and can be accessed via the Historic England Research Frameworks Platform - North Sea Prehistory Research and Management Framework (https://researchframeworks.org/nsprmf/). The North Sea Prehistory Research Agenda, presented as a series of questions and strategies to identify and prioritise research for both academic and development-led work. The Research Agenda has been updated through a process of sectoral consultation involving identification of new questions and strategies via stakeholder workshops and engagement and by reference to the Resource Assessment. Existing questions and strategies from the previous NSPRMF (2009) have been reviewed and adapted to fit the new Research Framework Agenda format. Data Sources A wide variety of resources have been accessed in order to outline advances or knowledge gained from development-led and research-driven projects that have been undertaken since 2009, including work that was ongoing while the NSPRMF 2009 was being prepared in 2008 (e.g. Aggregate Levy Sustainability projects). The resulting resource assessment based on geographical region will provide a firm basis to assess progress and identify new or existing gaps that should be incorporated into the updated research agenda.
