The survey was carried out in March 2013, which is earlier than guidelines recommend but was necessary owing to the project schedule. There are anticipated consequences. The intertidal survey concentrated on a 200m wide corridor (100m either side of the proposed cable route) and recorded biotopes from the high water mark to the low water mark on the day of survey (Figure 2). The survey was carried out on a spring tide to maximise the survey area. Phase 1 biotope mapping was undertaken using positions derived from a grid of 50x50m squares (Figure 2). Each point was a target where the predominant habitat and any obvious fauna will be noted, supported by hand-searching with trowel and hand-held sieve where appropriate. A hand-held GPS was used to navigate between target points and biotopes identified (if possible) with the JNCC version 04.05 biotope manual. This was assisted by reference to the biotope map of intertidal habitats of the Welsh coast created by Countryside Council for Wales in 2007 (see Section 3).
