This information is used to determine whether there has been a significant effect on the distribution of sandeel habitat as a proxy for sandeel abundance, as a result of the construction of the Race Bank Offshore Windfarm (RoW). This assessment of sandeel habitat will enable an evaluation of potential implications for the Sandwich tern population of the North Norfolk Coast Special Protection Area (SPA), which is a qualifying feature of the protected site. Sandwich terns feed on small- to medium-sized fish, particularly sandeel, and their foraging range can be as great as 50-60 km from their colony. As described in Greenstreet et al. (2010), as the percentage of fine sand, coarse silt, medium silt, and fine silt (particles less than 0.25 mm in diameter) increases, sandeel increasingly avoid the habitat. Conversely, as the percentage of coarse and medium sand (particles ranging from 0.25 to less than 2.0 mm) increases, sandeel demonstrate an increased preference for the habitat. Greenstreet et al. (2010) subsequently defined four distinct sandeel sediment preferences: Unsuitable, Suitable, Sub-Prime and Prime. Particle size data from the Year 1 post-construction monitoring survey (Ocean Ecology Ltd, 2018a and 2018b) were analysed following the methods of Greenstreet et al. (2010). The amount of silts and fines sands and coarse sands as a percentage of total sediment was used to allocate each sample location into four sandeel sediment preference categories (Figure 2.2). It should be noted that silts and fines sands are defined as those sediments passing through a 0.25 mm sieve, and coarse sands as those retained on a 0.25 mm sieve but passing through a 2 mm sieve (thereby including medium sands and very coarse sands as well as ‘coarse sands’ according to the Wentworth scale (Wentworth, 1922)). Although assessing sandeel habitats can be used as a proxy for sandeel abundance, as the Year 1 post-construction survey (Ocean Ecology Ltd, 2018a and 2018b) included faunal analysis and the faunal data set was checked for the presence of Ammodytes tobianus (lesser sandeel) and Hyperoplus lanceolatus (greater sandeel).
