Shore-based diving seabird surveys recording presence and behaviour within the Morlais Demonstration Zone of tidal turbine site in Wales, up to 5 km from land. Nest surveys were also conducted to calculate trip duration of adults from nests during breeding season. Access to the MCRP data is strictly subject to the MCRP Data Terms of Use. The observer was located at 53°18.273’ N, 004°41.600’ W (WGS 84’), in front of the wall by Ellin’s Tower, as agreed verbally with Laura Kudelska, the RSPB reserve manager. The observer set up relevant field equipment (see Section 2.2) at this location on each survey, with a view of South Stacks lighthouse and cliffs, as seen in Figure 2. Laser RangeFinder Binoculars (LRFB) with a magnification of x7, a target range of up to 6000 m, and an objective lens diameter of 50 mm were used, where possible, to record positional information of individual or groups of birds during surveys. LRFBs are operated by lining up the digital crosshairs in the FOV with a target to record distance of target to observer (m), compass angle (azimuth, 0–360°), and relative elevation (inclination, 60°) of the target from the observer. This information was then used to calculate target position. LRFBs were connected directly to a laptop to allow digital recording of information through product-specific software. Crucially, observers noted timestamp (hh:mm, Universal Time Coordinated, UTC) of the LRFB measurement for each sighting, to allow positions to be matched with sightings data at the analysis stage. The laptop was equipped with an additional external battery to ensure data were recorded throughout the day without interruption. Data were backed-up on to two external 4 TeraByte (TB) Hard Drives (HD) at the end of each day. Cole et al. (2019) suggest that LRFBs should be tripod mounted, to increase accuracy of observations; however, in practice it was not often possible to achieve measurements using the LRFBs, either tripod mounted or handheld, particularly in high-wind conditions. As such, observers instead used 7x50 reticle binoculars to calculate distance of birds from the observer, with nearshore (<1 km) range estimated visually, when it fell below the bottom reticle. Throughout the survey day, observers recorded environmental data regularly using form B (OSC, 2022a). The first data row was recorded immediately prior to the first survey of the day, and a new data row completed at least every 30 minutes, or if prevailing weather conditions changed within 30 minutes of the previous entry. A final set of environmental data was also recorded at the end of the survey day. Information that was recorded included: start and end time (hh:mm, UTC) of the corresponding period, Beaufort sea state – estimated visually using the Beaufort scale (Barua, 2005), wind speed (ms-1 ) – measured on a handheld anemometer – and thus corresponding Beaufort wind-scale value, wind direction – estimated by observers, visibility, cloud cover, precipitation and sun glare. Two measures of windspeed were taken: predominant wind speed observed within a ten-second measuring period, and maximum speed observed within the same period, to account for impact of strong gusts onsite. Visibility described the view to the horizon, accounting for prevailing weather conditions, whereby ‘P’ indicated poor visibility of <1 km out to sea, ‘M’ indicated medium at 1–5 km, and ‘G’ indicated good at >5 km. Cloud cover was recorded using the Oktas scale (Jones, 1992), in which the sky was divided into eighths and the number with clouds documented; total cloud cover therefore ranged from 0–8. Precipitation was categorised as none (N), light (L), moderate (M), strong (S) and variable (V). Lastly, sun glare on the sea surface was also recorded as either none (N), weak (W), moderate (M), strong (S), very strong (VS) or variable (V).
