The work took place on the morning of 17th April 2006 at 530 07.168’ N 00 24.567’ E approximately 6 km off-shore from Skegness. Detailed assessment of underwater noise levels were made throughout the piling sequence (a little over 4 hours) at two locations in a direction toward Gibraltar Point corresponding to ranges of 57 m and 1,850 m. The George D was moored without engines running and without echo sounder operation to avoid acoustic interference with the measurements. Two moored buoy systems were also deployed at a ranges 920 m and 2700 m from the piling location along the route to the coast at Gibraltar Point. Each buoy had two hydrophones spaced vertically in the water column at approximately one third and two thirds water depth (actual depth varied with tide). These hydrophones were connected to recording systems of limited bandwidth (44 kHz sampling rate). An additional hydrophone was deployed at the Jumping Jack piling platform (JJ), a distance of 57 m from the pile at a depth of 3 m. This hydrophone position was approaching the near field of the source and provides a measure of the field close to the pile. The recording system for this hydrophone also had a 44 kHz sampling rate. Deployment of a single hydrophone recording system from a small mobile craft (zodiac boat) was designed to allow recording of the sound pressure level as a function of range at greater distances from the piling operation during the main piling sequence.
