Such injuries are believed to be caused by the use of ducted propellers during slow manoeuvring of vessels (Thompson et al., 2010). Seals are protected under the marine (Scotland) Act 2010 and both harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) and grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) are common year around in the Outer Moray Firth with two Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) designated for harbour seals (Dornoch Firth and Morrich More SAC).
