The principal target species are lobster (Homarus gammarus) and brown crab (Cancer pagurus), although velvet crab (Necora puber) and whelk (Buccinum undatum) can from time to time provide additional income on a seasonal basis. This survey report provides an assessment of the distribution, density, proportionate gender distribution and size ranges of the above species within the defined limits of the inshore cable route. The characterisation studies of the shellfish assemblage within the inshore cable corridor commenced in August 2011, with PMSL deploying six fleets of pots containing seventeen standard parlour pots and an additional five fine mesh pots. The survey, which for August, was timed to coincide with the peak season for shellfish fishing activity, was repeated in January 2012, which is considered to be a period of low availability A local vessel based at Bridlington (Mirage II) was employed to facilitate the deployment and recovery of the static gear, which with the exception of the fine mesh pots, mirrored static gears commonly used in the fishery. To ensure coverage of the proposed inshore cable corridor and adjacent waters the vessel employed to participate in the survey (Mirage II) was based within the vicinity of the study area (Bridlington), the Mirage II (H) is an 11.9m vessel. The vessel has been recorded as fishing in both the nearshore and offshore region of the proposed cable corridor at Ulrome and has shellfish pots in the study area. PMSL considered it prudent to utilise the vessel, which was already operating in the area, had significant experience of fishing the survey route and is one of the vessels potentially affected by the proposed development.
