A total of 41 boat-based surveys were carried out from December 2007 until November 2010 inclusive. The main focus of this report was to use the data collected during boat-based surveys to establish a baseline against which any future changes during construction and operation can be measured. This data was used to identify which species were most likely to be affected by any changes on site during construction and operation. In addition, the species composition of the site and control were compared and the suitability of the control was discussed. The total transect length was 28.82 km within the site and buffer and 33.42 km within the control area. Aerial surveys in the Greater Wash area were conducted between winter 2004/05 and summer 2006 by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT) using the methodology recommended by COWRIE (Camphuysen et al. 2004) (see Box 2 for the full survey protocol). In 2006, transects were extended up to shore and the boundary of the North Norfolk tern/gull colonies to more accurately record the distribution of birds and the numbers involved.
