Ornithological survey methodology is based on that recommended by JNCC, ESAS and COWRIE (Komdeur et al. 1992) using combination of linear transects for birds on the water and snapshots for birds in flight. METHODOLOGY. Based on that recommended by Cowrie (2004). 1. Survey consists of a line-transects route to survey birds on the water during which regular snapshots are taken to survey flying birds. Counts, flight heights and flight directions (where applicable) were recorded for each species. Additional information regarding, age, sex, plumage and behaviour was recorded wherever possible. 2. Two modifications to the standard methodology were employed to improve data quality - (i) Forward scanning using high quality binoculars (as opposed to by eye) was undertaken to improve detection of divers and sea-duck that are known to flush from the sea surface at considerable distance from the vessel. (ii) Two 90 degree line transects were operated simultaneously wherever possible, to improve the probability of detection of rare species and those occurring at low density.
