It is based on a discrete particle representation concept which considers the physical, geochemical and biological mechanisms from which the fate and impact of drilling discharges can be predicted. Development of PROTEUS has been sponsored by a consortium of oil companies and the UK Government under the ‘Managing Impacts on the Marine Environment’ (MIME) programme. The model is based on research conducted at world-leading institutions in the fields of dispersion physics, geochemistry and ecotoxicology.
