One of the key consents for construction and operation of the wind farm is a Licence (10/59/F) issued under the Food and Environmental Protection Act (FEPA) by the Welsh Government (WAG). This licence contains several references to fish monitoring and electromagnetic fields. A sampling programme was developed under consultation and undertaken during September 2010 and May 2011 consisting of trawl and tangle net surveys respectively to provide information on benthic fish in and around the GyM site. The 2m-beam trawls are used as they cause relatively little damage to the seabed and are suitable for use within and around wind farm arrays; the gear provides useful information on epibenthic invertebrates and smaller demersal fish species but is not ideal for surveying the presence of large demersal fish, many of which can avoid capture. Data from trawl hauls is qualitative. Sampling was undertaken in daylight hours only to allow comparability across the site (different species of fish are active/inactive during hours of darkness). The tangle nets used consisted of a number three lead line and a 2.5 float line. The sheet netting was 0.65mm thick, consisted of 12 inch mesh, and was 8.5 meshes deep. Each net was 100 yards long and each fleet of nets was 10 nets long (therefore 1000 yards per fleet).
