The survey methodology described by Harris et al. (1989) was adopted to identify badger signs, including paths, prints, latrines, hair and shelters. The survey mainly focussed on suitable badger habitats within the study area which included woodland, grassland, hedgerows and road verges. All identified badger signs were noted and their location was recorded using a hand‐held GPS. Survey findings were subsequently digitised using GIS. All watercourses and waterbodies within 250 m of the Onshore Works were surveyed for evidence of otter by experienced surveyors, over four man days in July 2011. This involved searching for otter signs including faeces (spraints), shelters, feeding remains, slides, prints and tracks. Otter survey was carried out under optimal weather conditions, during periods of normal water levels in watercourses. All signs of otter activity, including confirmed and potential shelters, were noted and their location recorded using a hand‐held GPS. Survey findings were subsequently digitised in GIS.
