Herring are known to spawn in the Blackwater River region to the west of the wind farm site and some concerns over the potential impact that the underwater noise might have on migrating and spawning herring were raised. The primary aim of the measurements was to measure the levels of underwater noise from impact piling operations at a location where herring had been found to be spawning on the same day. This would enable cause and effect to be established. Ideally this would have involved carrying out a trawl for herring, and immediately after successfully finding spawning herring, measuring the levels of noise at that location. The process would then have been repeated at another location. However, due to the limited period of time each pile took to install this method was not feasible. The underwater noise monitoring locations were therefore chosen following discussions with Brown and May Marine and were dependent on where spawning herring had been found during the previous weeks survey, and also where it was believed the herring would be during the current survey.
