The following points should be noted about the data: · Where pulse lengths and powers are quoted, these are either both compressed pulse values, or both uncompressed values. · The vertical antenna pattern (i.e. the lobing pattern which quantifies how the signal strength varies as a function of elevation angle) was not obtained for the Raytheon ASR 10-SS and 23-SS radars. Where these radars have been modelled in this report the Watchman antenna pattern has been used. For the purposes of this study, the implied detection capability at range is of more importance than the individual parameters. A comparison is made in Figure 3-1 of the maximum detection ranges of the radars obtained in two different ways: (a) calculated using the stated technical parameters (using the radar range equation to calculate the maximum range at which an object with a 2m2 Radar Cross-Section (RCS) can be detected in the antenna boresight); (b) estimated from an understanding of the radar’s functional role. The ranges estimated based on the radar’s role are clearly estimates, and so the figure should be regarded as being indicative only. Generally speaking, the two estimates of maximum detection range are in good agreement.
