The SEA7 area includes the west coast of mainland Scotland with its numerous sea lochs, the continental shelf with the Hebridean Islands, the continental slope of the northern Rockall Trough, the Rockall Trough and its seamounts, the Rockall and Hatton Banks and the abyssal depths to the west of Hatton Bank. All these areas, except the abyssal depths support a diverse variety of fisheries using demersal, pelagic and static gears. SEA7 lies within ICES Sub areas VI and XII. Relevant aspects of the biology of 39 species or species groups have been described. Brief descriptions are given of the fishery for each species, including the method of fishing and the long term trends in the landings from each of the management areas are described. Those that are too large to download can be ordered via the website for postal delivery from BGS. download dataset This report was prepared by John D M Gordon, Honorary Fellow of the Scottish Association for Marine Science as part of the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change's Offshore Energy Strategic Environmental Assessment programme. The primary fishery management tool in the SEA7 area is the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) and when quotas become restrictive misreporting of catches can seriously distort landings data for some species. In the SEA7 misreporting has been and is prevalent between the west of Scotland (ICES Sub-area VI) and the North Sea (Sub-area IV) and between west of Scotland and Irish waters (ICES Sub-area VII). ICES Working Groups often make adjustments for what are termed unallocated landings and these data are used in this report. A wide variety of data sources have been used in this report ranging from literature reviews, site specific surveys, fishery surveys and ICES reports.
