Metadata: Invertebrate Data of Selected Coastal Soft Cliff Sites in Wales (2002 - 2004)
Abstract:
Coastal soft cliffs have been highlighted as a priority habitat under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan as a component of the Maritime Cliff and Slope. A total of 6 Grade 1, 7 Grade 2, and 47 Grade 3 species of invertebrates that are restricted to coastal soft cliffs have been identified for Wales. A 3 year survey, jointly funded by Countryside Council for Wales, National Museums of Liverpool and with logistical support from the National Trust was undertaken between 2002 and 2004 to provide more detailed information on invertebrate fauna of coastal soft cliffs at selected sites throughout Wales. The purpose of this data capture was to identify current threats and management requirements for soft cliff habitats, and to attempt to rank soft cliff sites on the basis of their cliff fauna across selected sites in Wales.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Ad hoc surveys occurred between 1987 - 2002 and 2004-2005. A total of 26 coastal soft cliff sites were surveyed, 16 of which were sampled intensively (primary sites). The study generated approximately 15,000 records for more than 2,000 invertebrates species. Records were collected by hand-sampling techniques, including searching and vacuuming bare ground, wet areas and short vegetation, sweep netting, hand netting and vegetation beating. Static traps were employed at the primary sites. At each trapping station a combination of 2 yellow water-traps, charged with salt solution and detergent, a grid or transect of 5 pitfall traps, charged with the same solution and a single Malaise trap were used. The data was provided to Countryside Council for Wales and is to be transferred and made available through Recorder 6. The 16 intensely sampled "primary" sites were spread throughout Wales. On the Llyn Peninsula 2 in Cardiganshire 5 in Pembrokeshire and 4 on the south Gower Coast. The survey was carried out during the month of June and July in 2002 2003 and 2004. Ad hoc surveys occurred between 1987 - 2002 and 2004-2005. Confidence in this dataset is high as surveys were carried out with experienced surveyors. Voucher specimens have been retained in perpetuity in the collections of the National Museums of Liverpool. Residual samples containing taxa not identified have also been retained. All samples collected by P.M. Pavett M. Howe J.Cooter I. Cheeseborough P. Boardman and B. Formstone as part of this project were determined by the collectors. |
