Metadata: Sea Empress Rocky Shore Impact Assessment/Monitoring: Permanent Transects and Rock Pool Studies
Abstract:
Three permanent intertidal transects in the vicinity of the Dale Fort Field Centre were established immediately following the Sea Empress oil spill. Marine communities at these sites and in rock pools at a further site were surveyed at intervals up to fourteen months post spill. Data was collected in order to assess the impact of the Sea Empress oil spill on the rocky shore.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Transect and rock pool surveys were carried out. - Transect Studies: All transects were surveyed using 0.25m2 frame quadrats at 1m vertical height intervals. Where possible, direct counts were made of numbers of individuals of each species present within the quadrat frame. When direct counting was rendered either impossible, because of the overwhelming numbers of individuals present or inappropriate, because of the growth form of the species; two different approaches were adopted. For all algae, lichens, small barnacles and colonial animals (e.g. sponges), percentage cover within the quadrat frame was estimated. For Littorina saxatilis (agg.) (rough periwinkles) and Melarhaphe neritoides (small periwinkle) the quadrat frame was sub-divided to form a smaller quadrat 0.10% of its total area. Numbers of individuals were counted within this smaller quadrat and the total multiplied by 10 to give an estimate of numbers per 0.25m2. Algae and colonial animals were assayed by estimating percentage cover of each species within the pool. Rockpool studies: Slip-Pier Beach near Dale Fort: Grid reference: SM 822052 |
