Metadata: Skomer Sublittoral Habitats and Communities 1984
Abstract:
In 2015 Skomer Marine Nature Reserve changed designation to Skomer Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ). This dataset contains the results of surveys of habitats and communities from 90 previously unsurveyed or poorly described sites around Skomer Marine Reserve. The dataset includes site locations, grid references, site descriptions and site maps; habitat information; community categories and species distributions. The purpose of this data capture was to add to the results of past surveys in collecting the information necessary to provide revised descriptions of habitats and communities for the whole reserve. A major aim of the survey was to produce more photographs of species and habitats in the reserve. The survey spanned the period between the 7th of March and the 6th of September 1984, with the majority of survey work undertaken in the summer months, specifically August.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The survey team consisted of diving scientists and diving non-scientists. Dives below 30 m were designated as being deep dives and required special planning. Sites were primarily chosen on the basis that they were unsurveyed deep sites or were of potential interest but not covered/only briefly covered in past surveys. Habitat descriptions, brief notes and profile drawings were recorded on specially prepared sheets (the habitat recording sheets were revised following the 1983 Skomer sublittoral survey- see separate metadata entry). Wave and tidal stream exposure were obtained and plant and animal species were recorded and abundance determined. Where necessary samples of unidentified plants and animals were taken to the lab for further information. At some sites, photographic records of habitats, communities and species were taken using a Nkionos underwater camera with an electronic flash. |
