Metadata: Benthic macrofauna and sediment particle size data from 1969 to the present from multiple sources stored on the OneBenthic database
Abstract:
The OneBenthic initiative brings together disparate benthic datasets (i.e. seabed macrofauna and sediment particle size) in one cloud-based PostgreSQL platform. The resulting high-quality, standardised dataset is used to generate new science, and new innovative and collaborative ways of working. Outputs are shared via open-access publications and a suite of interactive web apps (https://openscience.cefas.co.uk/). For further details of the initiative click here: `https://sway.office.com/HM5VkWvBoZ86atYP?ref=Link`_. This metadata record relates to the entire dataset, rather than its individual components and covers a timespan from 1969 to the present. .. _`https://sway.office.com/hm5vkwvboz86atyp?ref=link`: https://sway.office.com/HM5VkWvBoZ86atYP?ref=Link

| Other details | ||
| Internal code | Internally assigned metadata identifier | 9451 |
| Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | Benthic macrofauna and sediment particle size data from 1969 to the present from multiple sources stored on the OneBenthic database |
| Alternative title | The purpose of alternative title is to record any additional names by which the dataset may be known. | OneBenthic dataset |
| File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | CEFAS3673e50d-9960-4b55-9fb7-8255763d4bf5 |
| Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | CEFAS21270 |
| Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | dataset |
| Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 1969 |
| End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2023-10-26 |
| Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | continual |

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The OneBenthic dataset incorporates publicly available benthic data (macrofaunal abundance, sediment particle size- % weight by sieve size) from grab and core samples collected by government, industry and academia for purposes of characterisation, monitoring and research. Data come from multiple repositories (e.g. Marine Data Exchange: `https://www.marinedataexchange.co.uk/`_, UK Benthos: `https://oguk.org.uk/product/ukbenthos-database-5-14/`_, Eurobis: `https://www.eurobis.org/`_, JNCC's Marine Recorder) and organisations, both in industry (e.g. Marine Aggregates, Offshore renewables, Oil & Gas, Ports & Harbours, Cables) and government (e.g. Cefas, Defra, Environment Agency, JNCC, Natural England, Natural Resources Wales, Marine Scotland, Nature Scotland, Scottish Environmental Protection Agency, Department of the Environment Northern Ireland). The dataset includes data from multiple countries including the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, France, Germany and Russia. Only data deemed to be comparable have been incorporated into the dataset (i.e. collected and processed in a similar way). Clearly, users of the data will need to make their own judgements concerning appropriate use of the data. As new data are continually being added to the dataset, users are directed to the OneBenthic dashboard (`https://openscience.cefas.co.uk/obdash/`_) for more information. However, at the time of writing (16/07/2021) there were: 44,360 samples, 810 surveys, 1,379,190 records, 5,428 taxa, 106 data providers, 44 year timespan (1969-2020), 12 types of grab/core gear (0.1m2 to 0.25m2). .. _`https://www.marinedataexchange.co.uk/`: https://www.marinedataexchange.co.uk/ .. _`https://oguk.org.uk/product/ukbenthos-database-5-14/`: https://oguk.org.uk/product/ukbenthos-database-5-14/ .. _`https://www.eurobis.org/`: https://www.eurobis.org/ .. _`https://openscience.cefas.co.uk/obdash/`: https://openscience.cefas.co.uk/obdash/ |
