Metadata: Gear selectivity in the Irish Sea 2004/05 - Fisheries Science Partnership
Abstract:
To examine the effect on catches of using 80mm and 110mm cod-ends in the eastern and western Irish Sea plaice fishery using twin-rig otter trawls. To investigate the bycatch of cod in the eastern Irish Sea plaice fishery. To provide data on catch composition of the different types of Nephrops trawlers in the fleet operating from Northern Ireland, with particular emphasis on bycatch and discarding of cod and whiting. To provide information relevant to the design of a forthcoming FIFG-funded gear selectivity trial of Nephrops trawls in the Irish Sea involving ANIFPO and DARD(NI).

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Eastern Irish Sea - The purpose of this component of Fisheries Science Partnership Programme 8 (Gear Selectivity in the Irish Sea) was to demonstrate the effect of cod-end mesh size on the catch composition and quantities of fish discarded in the eastern Irish Sea plaice fishery, with particular emphasis on plaice and cod. The fishing vessel Kiroan was chartered to carry out 15 days of fishing with a twin-rig otter trawl on the plaice fishing grounds off Morecambe Bay during September and October 2004. Diamond-mesh cod-ends of mesh size 110mm were fitted for 38 hauls and a mesh size of 80mm for 26 hauls. Western Irish Sea - used three quite different types of Nephrops vessels: the FV Golden Bells II (a twin-rig vessel), the FV Rhodanna (a single-rig Nephrops trawler over 12m long) and the FV Margreta M (a single-rig Nephrops trawler less than 12m long). These vessels fished for 5 days each within the period 13 September to 29 October 2004. |
