Metadata: Yorkshire Coast Velvet Crab Maturity Study 2006/07 - Fisheries Science Partnership
Abstract:
A sample of 28 crabs was returned to the laboratory at the end of Fisheries Science Partnership work carried out at Bridlington with the aim of investigating the feasibility of a study on reproductive cycle. The fishing vessels Hollie J and Magdalene Ann were chartered in June 2006 to carry out a potting survey for velvet crabs in the area from Flamborough Head to North of Spurn Point. Target fishing positions were spread throughout the survey area, but potential gear conflicts confined most stations to a band 6 to 12 miles off the coast. The survey took place in June when catch rates of velvet swimming crabs were beginning to increase after a delayed start to the season.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The primary aim when this FSP project was conceived was to investigate the distribution and abundance of velvet crabs in relation to the overall species composition and abundance of the various crustacean species within the regional static gear fishery. In addition, and if time permitted, some experimental fishing was to be attempted to see whether interactions between the various crustacean species influences catchability and hence the observed catch rates. Crabs were morphometrically assessed before dissection and photography. A description of the extent, colour and ripeness of the gonad was recorded. |
