Metadata: Sea pen density data in towed video from Farne Deeps 2016
Abstract:
The dataset contains count and density (ind./m2) of the sea pens Pennatula phosphorea and Virgularia mirabilis in 121 video transects collected using a towed camera sledge at Farne Deeps (ICES Functional Unit 6) in June 2016. The data is saved as a csv file containing the video recording identifier, station identifier, video tow start and end coordinates and count and density of each sea pen species. The sea pen counts were extracted for the purpose of mapping sea pen density across the Farne Deeps mud basin. The video footage was originally collected as part of a programme of stock assessments for the Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus) coordinated by the the ICES Working Group on Nephrops Surveys (WGNEPS). The video surveys are carried out annually for specified Nephrops fishing grounds (‘Functional Units’, FU) for use by the European Commission to set annual Total Allowable Catches (TAC’s) at the ICES sub-area level.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The data has been collected using a randomised fixed grid of 110 annually visited survey stations positioned over the Farne Deeps Nephrops ground, with 11 additional coastal stations visited in 2016. The standard survey methodology used involves the use of a towed sledge mounted camera, to conduct 10-minute video tows at a speed of 0.7 knots. Vessel position during the tow is recorded every 10 seconds using a differential global positioning system (DGPS) and sledge position using an ultra-short baseline (USBL) transponder. Two fan lasers with a known distance are used to delimit the field of view. The video footage is collected using a Subsea Technology and Rentals (STR) SeaSpyder high-definition (HD) Internet Protocol (IP) 720p camera and stored in MP4 format. Videos were annotated using the BIIGLE (`https://biigle.de/`_) annotation software. Sea pens were recorded in the form of point annotations (by species), of each sea pen within the field of view delimited by the fan lasers. Counts were converted into an estimated density (individuals/m2) using the observed area derived from the width of the laser gates (0.81 m) and the length of each individual camera sledge tow (mean 219 m, SD 18 m). .. _`https://biigle.de/`: https://biigle.de/ |
