Metadata: The Coastal Temperature Network and Ferry route Programme: Long-term Temperature Observations
Abstract:
Offshore and nearshore temperature collected by a variety of means (data loggers, human observers) at a variety of intervals (some regular daily measurements). The Coastal Temperature Network (CTN) exists as a separate data set but is imported into LSDM (Laboratory Sampling Database Management system) via Sapphire user-interface. The LSDM also holds records of offshore temperatures. Includes data provided to Cefas by Port Authorities and power stations. The CTN comprises 38 fixed stations, some of which have records dating back to 1892.

| Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | The Coastal Temperature Network and Ferry route Programme: Long-term Temperature Observations |
| File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | 47eb1060080296c942fc3716eb5af527 |
| Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | 28 |
| Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | dataset |
| Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 1892-01-01 |
| End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2018-12-31 |
| Spatial resolution | This describes the spatial resolution of the dataset or the spatial limitations of the service. | inapplicable |
| Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | continual |

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The Coastal Temperature Network consisted of Cefas (and predecessor) originated data and data from external suppliers, who agreed their data could be published as part of the network. Samples were taken from piers and breakwaters 50-200m from the shore where possible. The network covered the temperature condition of coastal waters around the coast of England and Wales. Sample collectors included individuals on behalf of Cefas, councils, companies and other organisations. Cefas observers recorded coastal sea surface temperature using calibrated thermometers approximately 6 â?? 14 times per month, usually close to the time of high water. Other organisations recorded sea surface temperature ranging from daily values to monthly means and the final data are published as monthly means by site. The Cefas instruments are calibrated at Lowestoft to an accuracy of ±0.1°C. The accuracy of other instruments is not known, but is thought to be at least to an accuracy of ±0.2°C. Quality assurance checks were applied to the data for each station by comparing the current dataset with either a 5 or 10 year running mean for each month. The data were first tested to see whether they are normally distributed. The standard deviation was calculated to see how tightly the data are clustered around the mean; three standard deviations are then calculated to account for 99% of the data. If the data were outside this range (3 std dev) then the value was flagged and removed from subsequent analysis. |
