Metadata: 2022-2023 Fishing Industry Science Partnership (FISP) North Eastern Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (NEIFCA) North East Inshore ELSI Cage Species Abundance
Abstract:
The survey was designed to measure the number of early benthic stage Eastern European lobster larvae in the inshore North Sea. Cages were purposefully built for the project and 4 were dropped at 10 locations along the UK's North East coastline. The cages were left to soak on the seabed, the species found in the cages after retrieval were identified and the abundance recorded. Measurements of temperature and salinity were also taken.

| Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. |
| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Samples were not audited but were cross examined by 2 scientists from the University of Hull. Settlement collector cages are built of 10-gauge wire mesh (37mm) with dimensions of 61.0 cm x 91.5 cm x 15.0 cm providing 0.55m2 floor area. The inside of the cages are lined with a 2mm plastic mesh for retaining newly settled lobsters, crabs and other taxa and a 5mm plastic mesh over the finer mesh to prevent chafing. The cages are filled with clean rounded cobbles of various sizes. Samples had encrusting species removed before identification, these were not included as a species present in the cage. In the first year of sampling, every survey event ending in Y1 the sediment was processed through a 1mm sieve, whereas all surveyIDs ending in Y2 the sediment was processed through a 500µm sieve. |
