Metadata: 2001 - 2009 North Western Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (NWIFCA) English Solway Cockle Surveys
Abstract:
Cockle surveys on the two beds on the English side of the Solway Firth, Cardurnock and Beckfoot, were carried out by a consultant on behalf of the Cumbria Sea Fisheries Committee between 2003 and 2009. These surveys were used to identify commercial cockle beds, calculate the total tonnage of stock on a bed in order to calculate a TAC and also to monitor changes in stock levels.

| Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. |
| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The two cockle beds on the English side of the Solway, Cardurnock and Beckfoot, are surveyed. Survey stations are predetermined by a grid (with 500 or 400 m spacing at Cardurnock and 200 m spacing at Beckfoot) loaded onto a hand held GPS. ATVs are used to move around the bed between survey stations. At each station a 0.1 m2 is placed on the sand and the sediment within sorted with a 5mm mesh sieve. Any cockles retained by the mesh were returned to the CSFC office for further analysis. Every cockle in each sample was aged, measured and weighed. These results were then used to calculate density and biomass of each bed and to produce thematic GIS maps. Results were also used to calculate the amount of commercial stock available to a fishery at various minimum landing sizes. Available outputs include raw data, amalgamated data, GIS data, thematic maps and reports. |
