Metadata: 2004-2005, Anatec UK., Ormonde Offshore Wind Farm, Navigational Studies
Abstract:
Assessments of the shipping and navigational impacts resulting from the Ormonde wind farm. Environmental Statement Appendix 13. The assessment found that vessel activity within the Ormonde site was minimal, and the project was situated outside main navigation routes. While cumulative regional wind farm developments could modestly increase vessel encounter rates and collision risks, these remained well below industry averages. The study recommended mitigation measures including boundary adjustments, navigational aids, emergency access provisions, clear notification procedures, and ongoing stakeholder engagement, with further risk mitigation if additional developments proceed. The overall conclusion was that, with these measures in place, the Ormonde Project's impacts on navigation and marine safety would be minor and manageable.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Two maritime traffic surveys of the Morecambe Bay Offshore Wind Farm sites were carried out to collect data on vessel movements in the area. The initial survey commenced at 10:20 hrs on Thursday 26 August 2004 and was completed at 10:45 hrs on Thursday 9 September 2004. The second survey commenced at 14:20 hrs on Thursday 30 September 2004 and was completed at 15:30 hrs on Thursday 14 October 2004. The primary objective of the surveys was to identify the real-time routeing of vessels and the level of vessel activity at the proposed wind farm sites. This was achieved by recording in real-time the positions of vessels within range of the radar, supplemented by observation of vessels within visual range to obtain information on type and size. At the same time as recording radar data, data was also collated using an Automatic Identification System (AIS) which recorded the positions of ships fitted with AIS and the associated information on ship name, type, size, etc. |
