Metadata: 2011, Fugro GeoConsulting Ltd., Zone 6 - Rampion, Geotechnical Site Investigation
Abstract:
At the request of E.ON Climate and Renewables Fugro GeoConsulting Limited acted as the main contractor for a geotechnical site investigation at the Rampion Offshore Wind Farm Site which is located approximately 13 kilometres south of Brighton, West Sussex within the English Channel. The field work was performed using the M/V Fugro Saltire from 27 March to 6 April 2011, the M/V Willendeavour from 5 April to 9 April 2011 and the M/V Bucentaur from 24 June to 26 June 2011. The objective of this investigation was to provide sufficient geotechnical information to allow the detailed design of two Met Mast locations and provide geotechnical data to assess the soil conditions across the site. The water depth was in the range of 8.2 m to 44.9 m corrected to Lowest Astronomical Tide, as measured by the drillstring.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The first phase of work was performed using the M/V Saltire from 27 March to 06 April 2011 and the M/V Willendeavour from 5 April to 9 April 2011 and the second phase using the M/V Bucentaur from 24 June to 26 June 2011, in accordance with instructions received from E.ON. A total of nine boreholes of combined sampling and CPT were performed from the M/V Fugro Saltire, with eight boreholes performed to a depth greater than 45 m and an additional borehole performed adjacent to BH04. During BH04, an error was made in tidal correction readings, and it was discovered that the driller had drilled to 4.5 m BSF and not the required 2.5 m BSF. It was decided to continue with BH04 and an adjacent borehole as performed to fill the data gap to 4.5 m. Corrections were made to all the recovered data and the error in depth records does not affect the quality or reliability of the data. An error occurred with the UU triaxial testing machine where the displacement transducer was damaged during sample removal, which meant it was not possible to perform UU testing at BH02, the transducer was later fixed and normal UU testing resumed on the next borehole. This does not affect the quality of the data at any other locations, which are believed to adequately represent the soil conditions and show good correlation with the in-situ testing performed. A total of 6 vibrocores and 6 Wheeldrive CPT were performed at 5 locations from the M/V Willendeavour, with a second CPT and second vibrocore attempt performed at CPT19Ca and VC20Cb, respectively. Whilst attempting to recover the wave rider buoy to the M/V Willendeavour the second section of the rubber bungee became caught on the underneath of the ships anchor. After several attempts to free the bungee it was decided that the safest way to move forward was to un-attach the wave rider buoy and release the rubber with two fender buoys attached and try to manoeuvre the vessel as to free the snagged line. Whilst attempting to manoeuvre the vessel the strain became too much for the rubber and it parted roughly 10 cm below the top connector (which was attached to the two fender buoys). Crew along with a specialist team of divers onboard returned to site to recover the remaining wave buoy equipment. These buoys were then recovered along with the parted top section. The vessel and FAOL crew proceeded to recover the rest of the equipment to deck using both the ships crane and main lift winch. The second phase was performed from the M/V Bucentaur from 24 June to 26 June 2011 and consisted of a total of 2 boreholes performed at 1 location. A CPT borehole, BH03, and adjacent sampling borehole, BH03A, were performed to a depth of 50.5 m and 45.1 m respectively There were no other major problems associated with the geotechnical investigation |
